HEALTH INFORMATICS- INTEGRATING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN ADVANCE HEALTHCARE

Health Informatics
Health Informatics Certificate

Health informatics is an emerging field integrating information technology for advance healthcare to benefit the health and human services industry and the great role of healthcare informatics in the present-day health care is well recognized globally.

The United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) defines health informatics as "the interdisciplinary study of the design, development, adoption and application of IT-based innovations in health care services delivery, management and planning”. Health informatics is also known as health care informatics, or medical informatics and caters the other important fields of healthcare such as dental informatics, nursing informatics, clinical informatics, or biomedical informatics. The basic concept of health informatics is the information engineering applied to the field of health care, essentially the management and utilization of patient health care information. The disciplines include information science, computer science, social science, behavioral science, and management science. Thus, Health Informatics is an interdisciplinary field that brings together computer sciences, the medical sciences and health care, to achieve better health for people.

Health informatics is a multidisciplinary field that uses health information technology (HIT) to improve health care by providing higher quality and higher efficiency in healthcare with new opportunities. It deals with the resources, devices, and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of information in health and biomedicine. The tools include computers, clinical guidelines, formal medical terminologies, and information and communication systems, among others. It is applied to the areas of nursing, clinical medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, public health, occupational therapy, physical therapy, biomedical research, and alternative medicine all of which are designed to improve the overall effectiveness of patient care delivery by ensuring that the data generated is of a high quality. Dental informatics involves the use of computers and information technology to improve dental practice and research practices in dental sciences.

With the detailed study of health informatics one can acquire the knowledge and skills to assist in the creation and use of health-related data, as well as the implementation and applications of information/communication technologies in the health system that can enable and support all aspects of safe, efficient and effective health services such as planning, research, development, organization, provision, evaluation of services.

Health informatics provides the practice of acquiring, studying and managing health data and applying medical concepts in conjunction with health information technology systems to help clinicians and healthcare professionals provide better healthcare. Informatics can be applied to prevent many irregularities by streamlining the way medical records are stored and retrieved in electronic health care record systems. It also improves the standardization of patient information, making it easier for future health care professionals to streamline their own practices.

While the EHR(Electronic Health Record), EMR(Electronic Medical Record) and EDR(Electronic Dental Record) are the most recognized examples of clinical informatics in action in today’s healthcare world, health information technology (HIT) is present everywhere in the healthcare system such as Electronic portals give patients instant access to their medical and dental health records, Bed management systems allow hospitals to manage their patient census, Radio frequency identification (RFID) help track patients, providers and equipment etc.

As health science and technology is advancing leaps and bounds, so do the improved health outcomes of patients. New informatics technologies improve inter-connectivity between patients and medical professionals, and it is a major key to advancing global health care industry. Worldwide medical & dental professionals, Health professionals, microbiologists, clinicians, and clinical and practical nurses all are receiving benefits of using clinical informatics.
