MARIJUANA- ORAL / DENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS

Marijuana and Dental Health

With the legalization of marijuana or cannabis, and with Marijuana use on the rise for both medicinal and recreational purposes, dental professionals are concerned more for their patient’s dental health. Many of the dental professionals consider marijuana as an additional contributing factor in their patient’s oral health. It is important to develop an understanding of the issues related to marijuana use so that the dental patients can be guided and treated appropriately since the frequency of occurrence is likely to continue to rise.

Dental health care providers need to be aware that their patients may be suffering with poor oral health for reasons other than those that they are accustomed to. Patients with poor oral health usually have problems such as deficient oral hygiene practices, high/low blood glucose, poor diet choices, heavy alcohol/tobacco consumption, etc. However, it would be good to know that marijuana may harm the oral cavity. There is a lot of debate going on this. Studies suggest frequent use of marijuana may increase the risk of severe gum/periodontal disease like tobacco does. Dental health professionals must be aware of the oral manifestations of medical-grade marijuana. Studies report marijuana users tend to get sick more frequently and undergo personality changes leading to poor oral hygiene due to lack of energy and loss of interest in everyday activities such as brushing, flossing, and rinsing. The inhaled form of cannabis may cause respiratory tissues and may lead to conditions like hyposalivation, decay and dry mouth. Marijuana's harmful effects on the mouth may include the risk of mouth cancer.
