EXERCISE ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG / EKG)

Updated: Feb 21, 2020

An exercise electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is different from a standard (resting) ECG. An exercise EKG is a test that checks for changes in the heart while a person exercises. Sometimes EKG abnormalities can be seen only during exercise or while symptoms are present. An exercise EKG translates the heart's electrical activity into line tracings on paper. This test is sometimes called a ‘stress test’ or a ‘treadmill test.’

An exercise electrocardiogram is performed to help find the cause of unexplained chest pain or pressure, tolerance capacity of patients with history of heart attack or heart surgery, best treatment options for angina, causes of dizziness, fainting, or rapid, irregular heartbeats (palpitations), check for a blockage or narrowing of an artery after medical procedure like angioplasty or coronary artery bypass surgery, especially if the person has chest pain or other symptoms.

Exercise electrocardiograms are not recommended if a person is healthy and have no symptoms of heart disease, however.

The ECG/EKG program-1 day/2 days/3 days- training/ certification/ workshop at Springfield College helps prepare you get skills needed for a challenging career in Canadian Healthcare as an ECG technician- may be in hospital, medical clinics, cardiologists’ and physicians’ private practices. As EKG technicians work in healthcare facilities with doctors and technologists and specialize in EKG testing for patients, students learn details and techniques of ECG/EKG, patient communication and patient preparations for ECG, monitoring the ECG machine, readings, and recording the results of EKG tests in this ECG Program.
