Mental health and substance abuse certificate program at Springfield College is an online certificate program designed to make the students learn the diverse aspects of community mental health, factors contribute to various mental health problems, comorbidities, understanding the warning signs of mental illness and stigma associated with mental health and coping with it as well as the close association of substance use in clients affected by mental health disorders. The students will be able to discuss the definitions and concepts of mental health, mental illness, explain the difference between mental health and mental illness and what it means to them while working in healthcare. They will be able to understand, apply the concept of and efficiently work with those suffering from the impact of the stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, various eating disorders and other mental health conditions to describe their own stress and general wellbeing and that of their clients.

The program provides detailed knowledge and educate students about a variety of very important topics such as controlled and illegal drugs, substance abuse in clients suffering from the mental health problems, controlled acts and drugs, drug scheduling in Canada, unscheduled drugs, the new Cannabis Act and its supporting regulations, crucial details related to and uses, applications, side effects of the substances such as CBD and THC and mental health. The program also focuses upon the importance and application of the vital resources and tools being used to support mental health clients in the workplace throughout Canada, HR insights, roles of employers and employees and the work-related risk factors for health and their prevention strategies. Students will also be able to learn about the proportions of global disability-adjusted life-years (DALY) associated with mental disorders, govt. resources of AbilitiCBT, Big White Wall and CAMH, important mental disorders and mental health services. The program also includes vital details about the mental health and mental disorders for FLWs (Front Line Workers), the serious issue of academic stress and mental health and effective strategies to combat it. Students will be able to learn from the discussed case scenarios, common and severe mental health conditions and their management, various effective mental health awareness strategies and ways to maintain positive mental health. The knowledge provided helps students to identify common mental health disorders and the factors behind that, comprehend the stigma attached to mental health and disabilities and also understand the management options for mental health problems.

 

 

Course objectives 

 

Upon completion of the program, the participants will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between mental health and mental illness and what it means to them while working in healthcare

  • Know how to efficiently work with those suffering from the impact of the stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, various eating disorders and other mental health conditions

  • Achieve in-depth knowledge and information about a variety of controlled, scheduled, unscheduled and illegal drugs, their routes of administration, safety standards, fatality and substance abuse in clients suffering from the mental health problems

  • Focus upon the application of various vital resources and tools to support mental health in the workplace.
